class BF10 history

The NSB (Norwegian State Railways) got ites first steel passenger cars in 1935. In 1938 it get an additional three and they were combined passenger and luggage cars. In 1954/55 an addiional 11 cars of the same type were delivered. In 1970, as part of the new classification system, these cars were classified as BF10. The first 3 as type 1 and the second serie as type 2. The type 2 cars have a more rounded end, than the very straight end of the type 1.

The BF10 has 5 compartiments of 8 seats each, 40 seats in total. There is also a luggage compartiment, accessible through large doors on the side.

The BF10 type 1 was a serie of 3 cars delivered in 1938, the 21501-21503. In the late 1960's they were thorougly rebuilt and specifically the 21503 was significantly modified. The 21503 got corrugated sides and the semi retractable windows. The BF10 was originally built with truss type bogies/trucks. In later years they were replaced by the MD (Minden-Deutz) bogies/trucks. The 21503 got this in 1987.

The 21501 was retired in 1986 and the 21502 1987. The 21503 was in service until 1992. After it was taken out of service, it got it old bogies/trucks back and was moved to Notodden were it stood for many years. Unfortunately it got vandalized and in 2005 it was finally scrapped. The photos show the 21503 in Notodden in 1996.

class BF10 type 2

The 11 type 2 cars looked very different from the type 1 due to the rounded ends, this included the roofs. They were modernized in the late 1960's and some cars got different windows (semi retractible). Also the bogies/trucks were replaced by the standard MD truck.
The type 2 cars were numbered 21504-21514. Three of them (21506, 21507 and 21510) were completely rebuilt into BF13 cars in 1977/78. The first that was retired was the 21508 in 1975, as it was part of a major accident at Tretten. The last to remain in service was the 21509 (until 1998).
The 21504 is been preserved and is part of the Norwegian Railways Museum collection.
